Trick-Or-Treat

Happy Halloween! I am sad that October is over! It's been a good month.
Ah, I miss the days back at home when I was younger around these last months of the year. There are several cartoons and other shows I remember watching; Ichabod Crane and Charlie Brown Halloween being my two favorites.
I remember trick-or-treating with my siblings up through my high school years. I remember lots of lipstick and lots of candy always being involved. Memories, memories, I miss those days. Those wonderful, happy, carefree years of childhood.
I remember my mom decorating the house with pumpkins, scarecrows, and autumn leaves. Cinnamon and pumpkin candles and the beautiful Texas warm weather; just starting to cool down.
We have a huge globe willow tree in our front yard at home, and I have memories of hanging these tiny jack-o-lanterns (that were hollow at the top) with black yarn all through out the tree at the beginning of the month. I have memories of walking out the door for school some mornings after it had rained, and tipping the pumpkins over to empty out the water.
This year, Halloween landed on a Sunday. But because I am in Utah, we actually had several trick-or-treaters come on Saturday versus today.
This morning I got up early and attended my church meetings, which were excellent. I especially loved our gospel doctrine class today. We discussed Isaiah chapters 55 and 56. I loved the versus about strengthening our stakes and enlarging our boarders; it reminds me of how important missionary work really is, and how important every single person individually is to our Heavenly Father. It reminds me of the plan of salvation, and how much our Heavenly Father wants us to be happy, truly happy, and return to Him with honor. I loved chapter 63 where it talks of the true nature and characteristics of our Heavenly Father and His son Jesus Christ.
"I will mention the
lovingkindnesses of the Lord, and the praises of the Lord, according to all that the Lord hath bestowed on us, and the great goodness toward the house of Israel, which he hath bestowed on them according to his mercies, and according to the multitude of his lovingkindnesses." (Isaiah 63:7)
After church, I went home with my roommates and we cooked and ate dinner together. We all rested and went to our ward prayer tonight.
We had a great thought given by one of the ward members about gratitude. He reminded me not only of the importance of gratitude, but the importance of writing things down that I am grateful for. I need to be better at that.
After ward prayer, a few friends and I went to a friend's house and played games for a while for his birthday. It was really fun.
We played a game called "What if...Then..."
One of the cards: "What if Suzanne drank whole milk?"
Me: "HEY!!"
Then I came home with my roommates.
Well, I am excited for a new week and a new month! New things to come. I am happy, I love my life :)

Roses

Fact about me: Roses are my favorite flower.
Wow I didn't write again yesterday, but it was probably for the best because I went to bed so late and whatever I would have written wouldn't have made any since.
So lets start with Friday. I slept in a little and got myself ready for the day. I went with my roommate to one of her classes. It was a business fundamentals class, and one of the groups was giving a presentation that she thought I would find amusing. It was a good presentation on customer service and I was glad I went. Afterwards, I went to my business communications class. I turned in my assignment, had a pop quiz (thank goodness it was open book) and was out the door.
My Friday can really start once my classes are over!
I came home and did some laundry and showered. Some of my roommates invited me and one of my friends to go to an institute dance with them. So eight of us got together at a friend's house and ate dinner together and toasted marshmallows. Then we all piled back into the car and drove down to the Gateway where the dance was.
Lets just say that I've been to better dances. It was super fun to hang out with my friends and the Halloween costumes worn by the other people there were certainly entertaining and creative. I had a blast.
We stayed for a little bit and then headed to the Business College for the Halloween party over there. It was super fun as well; there was a small haunted house and dancing and mostly just socializing.
My friend and I went back to his house and watched a movie with his roommates and a few others. We watched-yet agian-another scary movie. Only, it wasn't that scary. There were a few intense parts but overall it was just an interesting movie.
Scary movies aren't really my thing.
A couple of friends drove me home and there was a party going on at my place. So we stayed up longer ha and watched the last few minutes of the movie they were watching. After everyone left, one of our friends wanted to stay the night.
She and I talked for an hour or so, becuase she had some things she needed to talk to me about.
I ended up going to bed around 4am...
(Don't tell my mother) :)
Overall, a very fun day! Way too much fun and not enough sleep for sure.
I got up this morning at 7am and walked out the door at 8:30am to clean the stake center again with my ward. This week is our last week! :)
After cleaning the stake center, I walked around and took some pictures on my way home and talked to my parents on the phone. When I came home I went right back to bed.
No questions asked.
When I got up, my roommate came home from Provo for a bit to set up her keyboard! I am really excited that she has one; she is going to start taking piano lessons. I'm so jealous.
Fact about me: I took piano for a while growing up from both my mother and a hand full of theachers. I can play a few hymns but thats about it. I can read music really well and I really enjoy good music.
I showered and got myself ready for my date this evening. I met up with my friend at his house. He cooked dinner for me and it was very delicious. Afterwards, we wrote letters to a young man in our ward who just went out on his mission. When we were done, we popped in a movie. One of my favorite movies actually, we watched 'What about Bob?' We talked for a while and then he walked me home.
It's been raining most of the day today, so it was really nice outside on our walk back to my place. I love rain. It was cool, but not too cold; and the air was fresh and chilly. We stepped over puddles in the sidewalk and talked the whole way back. I had so much fun.
When I came home, my roommates had a few friends over.
And they all wanted to know about my date. :)
I guess that's what happens when you walk through the door with roses.

Way Too Much Fun

Weather forecast for today: freezing cold, snow, and more freezing cold.
As my friend Phil would say, (Yea, like the groundhog Phil): "You want a prediction about the weather, you're asking the wrong Phil. I'll give you a winter prediction: It's gonna be cold, it's gonna be grey, and it's gonna last you for the rest of your life."
(Groundhogs day)
Today was such a long day, but such a good day! My alarm went off this morning bright and early and I was out the door and on the 8:35am trax. I chatted with mom on the way to school; I enjoy talking to my parents on a regular basis.
Public Speaking was my first class for the day at 9:20am. We listened to a speech given shortly after 9/11 by President George Bush; it was one of the best speeches I have ever heard. It was so well presented, written, and spoken. Afterwards we split into our groups and discussed our group service project. We-as a group-have to to pick and do a service project (we were thinking maybe the bishop's store house or something) and then write and present a speech in class.
This should be good; I love going to the bishop's store house to volunteer.
I had a break before my next class where I studied my scriptures for the day. Wow, I was caught up on my homework for the day, I didn't hardly spend any time in the library for once! :)
I went to my Doctrine and Covenant's class with my roommate. My roommate's parents are in town, so I met her mom today. It was super nice to meet her!
My roommate was also nice enough to volunteer me to play the piano today :) that was fun...
In class we discussed sections 27 and 28. We read about putting on the full armor of God; I love those last versus in section 27:
"Wherefore,
lift up your hearts and rejoice, and gird up your loins, and take upon you my whole armor, that ye may be able to withstand the evil day, having done all, that ye may be able to stand.
Stand, therefore, having your loins
girt about with truth, having on the breastplate of righteousness, and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace, which I have sent mine angels to commit unto you;
Taking the shield of faith wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the
fiery darts of the wicked;
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of my
Spirit, which I will pour out upon you, and my word which I reveal unto you, and be agreed as touching all things whatsoever ye ask of me, and be faithful until I come, and ye shall be caught up, that where I am ye shall be also. Amen."
I had another break before my next class so I worked on a few things in the library and chatted with my roommate.
Mission prep was my last class for the day. We talked about how to handle objections. I really thought it was a most interesting lesson; he talked about the difference between an investigator who has questions: lacks understanding and knowledge/information, and an investigator who has an objection: lacks belief, has pride, and needs a spiritual witness.
It's kind of difficult for me to explain, but what I thought was good to remember was you can't push anyone and you can't argue with them. I know that sounds basic, but once the Spirit isn't there any more, you can't teach effectively. You need to find those who are ready to receive the gospel; those who are ready to believe and understand, and not for those who want to find contention.
I came home, ate, changed my clothes, and was out the door again for a stake Relief Society meeting. Such a good training meeting; we discussed how visiting teaching works and how the MLS program works on the computer. I love our stake Relief Society presidency, they are truly amazing.
After my meeting was over, a friend invited me over to watch a movie.
I went home and changed again and was out the door once more. (Wow, I feel like I have been out more than at home today!)
Fact about me: I am not a fan of scary movies.
So we watched a scary movie...
Actually it wasn't that bad. There were a few intense moments, but overall the plot line was decent and interesting. Good movie.
Good company too, I just have way too much fun :)
Afterwards, we sat around a chatted and then they took me home.
I am so tired! I just have way too much to do plus I have way too much fun. :) So worth it though, I love my life! I just love being happy all the time!

I So Called It

So remember that prediction I made yesterday about waking up to snow?
Ya.
I opened my blinds this morning in the kitchen like I do every morning.
I cringed at the sight.
A soft, light, blanket of snow drifting down gently on the rapidly disappearing, green grass below.
And then I closed my blinds in disbelief.
What did I tell you? I so called it.
It's October! Why is it snowing? I'm not ready to say goodbye to my short sleeved shirts!
So I got ready for school this morning, I had cream of wheat for breakfast, (hope you're proud of me mom) and I was out the door wearing a sweater.
My roommates and I all walked out the door together, shivering the whole car ride to school.
I went to my math class first thing this morning. Nothing like snow and math all in one day. You know your going to have a good day if...
Afterwards I had a break between classes. I met up with a good friend of mine in the library and we signed up for a class together for next semester and then just chatted. I had a blast with her; we were probably a little too noisy for the library. :)
Business Communications was next; we peer edited our resumes and cover letters. I was pretty proud of myself, but I am just not a short and to the point kinda writer.
Obviously.
I like to write detailed and lengthy sentences full of fun adjectives and interesting uses of word choice. I just like to write.
However, this is not a creative writing class. You have to cut out all the fluff.
I'm working on it.
I need to be better about my sociology class. I usually end up doing all my reading for that class the day of so I end up spending my entire day in the library reading for that class, and then discussing it with my class for the next three hours. And then I'm so sick of it, that I put it of again until the next week.
Such is this homework cycle.
I met up with another friend and we read the chapters together and worked on the study questions. I went to my night class and I really enjoyed the presentations given today.
Well, I guess I was pretty entertaining in class today. I am so tired; night classes will be the death of me. I love this class, don't get me wrong, but a three hour class just kills me.
I was struggling really hard to stay awake in class today and I guess everyone around me found it pretty entertaining.
I was kinda embarrassed, not going to lie; I couldn't help it.
During our break in the middle of class, my friend from class got me starbursts again; "To help you stay awake."
Me: "Oh gosh, you sit half way across the room from me, and you saw that?"
Well my roommate was feeling sick today, so she did not go to her regular night class this evening. I usually ride home with her, but today I took trax.
Still cold outside.
I talked on the phone with my parents on my way home; good to chat with them.
I came home and worked on homework and made brownies. :)
Later my friend came over and we just talked for a long time. So fun; I really enjoy listening to him and getting to know him better. :)
Well, I still have a bit of reading left to do and then *hopefully* I should be off to bed a little earlier tonight.
Great day. I am happy. :)

Hot Chocolate Kinda Day

So it's starting to get cold now and I'm kinda sad. I bet you that I'll wake up tomorrow to some snow, and it's not going to leave until March or April.
Oh Utah.
The thing is though; I love snow actually.
It is so beautiful and peaceful. I love the perfect white blanket of icy, wet, snow that crunches beneath your footsteps.
I love wearing colorful, frilly, scarves and and pulling on large snow boots. Warm gloves and funny hats. Does this coat make me look fat?
I love the rosy cheeks and complexions of children and friends. I love seeing your breath, and purposefully breathing hard just to see it better.
I love snowflakes that land on your eyelashes and nose.
(That line kinda sounded like something from 'sound of music'...)
I love making snowmen and snow angels. Snowball fights and sledding are a must.
Fantasy: Dancing in the snow...
The tingle in your fingers when they get too wet or cold.
Walking under a tree and watching a pile of snow from above come landing right on ya.
(Been there before)
Ah snow.
Well, I like it better from my window while drinking hot chocolate.
I love Tuesdays, even though they are busy. I got up early this morning and walked out the door at 8:25am. Man is it cold out today!
I went to my public speaking class where we discussed several General Conference talks and how to incorporate quotes, jokes, and statistics into the introduction of our speeches.
Next I went to our school's weekly devotional. We had a most excellent speaker today. He talked about the importance of the Atonement. He talked about it in such a unique way; I really loved it and I don't wish to get too personal here. It was a great devotional.
I went to my Doctrine and Covenants class with my roommate; I had to present today. I taught from section 25; a revelation given to sister Emma Smith. I love this section. It talks a bit about the importance of the hymns of the church and how music is pleasing to our Heavenly Father. Something that I liked was how she was told to remember to support her husband in his calling; to comfort and use consoling words in his afflictions. "Let thy soul delight in thy husband..."
In my break, I went to the cafe with my roommate and ate lunch with her. Afterwards, I went to my mission prep class. I really enjoyed class today. Something that stood out to me were these three ideas that he presented:
1. You don't have to suffer to be forgiven.
2. You have to suffer in order to change.
3. You have to change in order to be forgiven.
I met up with some friends after my class and the three of us went to the Temple; I had a really sweet experience there. They took me home afterwards and I have been working on my homework since then...
Ah homework never seems to end.
Neither does the snow...

Pumpkin Carving

Happy Monday! I am happy! :)
I just love being happy, don't you? I know that when you do what's right, you will be happy. Pretty straight forward.
It works.
So I got up early this morning and got to school in time for my math class. I was early, so I read my scriptures and did some homework with my roommate before class. I went to my class, and I feel like we get off subject a lot... So there was a lot of chatter about cars and not a whole lot of math going on. I guess that's what happens when it's a no credit class..
I always go though and I try to endure...
After class, I had an hour and a half before my next class so I spent some time in the computer lab and in the library working on homework. I met a few new people today, and that was fun.
I went to my Business Communication's class where we talked about resumes and I tried not to fall asleep :)
I actually really like our new teacher, I feel like I learn a lot more from her. My other teacher knew what she was talking about, but wasn't that great at teaching.
Teacher: "This is a noun."
Me: "Zzzzzzz..."
So I think this will be good.
So when I was done with classes for the day, I met up with some friends and we got lunch at Subway. I get the same thing every time I go.
Fact about me: I used to work at Subway.
(Refer to my other blog: FastFoodFolly)
I've noticed a few things that they are doing wrong every time I go to Subway. For example: When I worked there, there was a formula you followed for making the sandwiches.
For a six-inch turkey sandwich: three pieces of meat, two slices of cheese, and then three of any other vegetables the customer wants (or more if they request). For a foot long turkey sandwich: six pieces of meat, four slices of cheese, and then six pieces of any other vegetables the customer wants (or more if they request).
However, I feel like every time I've gone this semester, they do it all wrong! I go in to get a foot long BLT, and I ask for lettuce and tomatoes first. They always only put four tomatoes on my sandwich instead of six!
Hello! For cheese you put four slices, but for veges, come on!
So today I asked for a few more tomatoes (because I love tomatoes and I'm supposed to get six anyways) and the girl making my sandwich was like "You just want more of everything, don't you?"
*Rude*
Me: "Oh. Well, whatever makes the customer happy, right?"
Girl: "I guess."
She was probably not having a good day.
So after we ate, my friend offered to take my roommate and I home. That was really nice; I'm not a fan of the trax.
I came home and worked on some homework...
For FHE tonight we met up at the Stake center to carve pumpkins. We worked in teams to carve the pumpkins which were to be judged by our bishopric.
Our group's pumpkin won the "festive" award ha.
So tonight, I invited my friend over to work on homework. But my roommate invited other friends to watch a movie...
So we all watched this movie together.
It was a suspenseful movie (it's October, I guess you have to watch at least one scary movie, right?) I thought it was..... interesting.
I had a blast with my friends though, I'm glad they all came over. Didn't get any work done, but hey, I had fun :)
We sat around and talked for a while, and then everyone left to go home.
My roommates and I did some homework and dishes together.
And now I'm going to bed.
Ciao.

Stake Conference

Okay I didn't write yesterday again, so this is going to be another two-in-one post. I had a fantastic weekend, as always.
Saturday I had Stake Conference at 9am.
Fact about me: My biggest pet peeve in the whole world is being late.
So I set my alarm Friday night for 6am so that I would be up in time to walk out the door at 7:45am with my RS presidency. We were supposed to get their early to set up a few tables and center pieces.
I guess I must have been so tired that when my alarm went off that morning that I turned it off and then I turned it back on; thinking that it would go off at the right time, because it wasn't time to get up yet.
I NEVER do that. Ever.
Ever.
I never hit the snooze button, ever.
I am always a very disciplined person when it comes to getting up in the morning.
So you would imagine my surprise when my phone rang at 7:40am and I was not out of bed yet.
I was so mad at myself.
Well, I got myself ready as quickly as I could and walked out the door (more like ran out the door) and I was there about twenty minutes late.
Well, you do the best you can and that is the best you can do.
Stake Conference was amazing, we had some really excellent speakers. Afterwards, we had a pancake breakfast with our stake. It was really fun.
After Stake Conference, I ran home, changed my clothes, and was out the door again in ten minutes. I took the trax over to the Stake center to help my ward clean it. I love cleaning.
I came home and relaxed a bit. I have been so busy lately, and especially that morning I had been a little overwhelmed because I was late. I wrote a few letters; writing relaxes me. And I talked to my parents on the phone.
Later that evening, a good friend of mine and I met up with my sister and her husband on Temple Square. We went to an orchestra concert in the tabernacle.
It was amazing! I miss the orchestra, I have a special place in my heart for the string instruments. They were beautiful.
Funny story: The first piece they played was actually very humorous to both my sister and I because it was a piece played in a cartoon that we used to watch growing up. We couldn't help but remember the hilarious words to that song in the cartoon as they played. We tried our hardest not to be noisy, but it certainly made my day. My friend probably thought that I was nuts. :)
After the concert, my friend and I met up with some others from our ward. We went back to their place and had hot chocolate and talked. I had a blast.
Today, I actually got up to my alarm :)
One of my friends from the stake came and picked me up for Stake Conference. We sat with some of my friends from the ward. It was a broadcast for 71 different stakes! Again, there were some really excellent speakers.
I came home and my roommates and I put on a movie.
Definitely fell asleep.
I got up and went with my presidency over to a girls apartment in our ward who is getting surgery done tomorrow. We visited with her for a while, we love her.
When I came home, one of my friends came over and we made dinner with my roommates. After we ate, we watched a movie and hung out. It was fun.
So I had another really great weekend. This upcoming week is going to be busy, busy. I'm excited for life!

I've Gotta Feeln'

I've gotta feeln', that tonight's gonna be a good night!
Well, it most certainly was actually.
Let me back up to this morning.
I usually get to sleep in on Fridays, however this Friday was different. I had a presidency meeting this morning at 8:30, which went very well. Afterwards, my friend drove me to the school where I decided to go to the library to work on some things before my 1:30 class.
But,
I didn't have any of my school stuff with me, only my things from my meeting.
Sad day.
I had to take the trax home, grab lunch, grab English stuff, and then head back asap.
It was crazy, but it was done successfully.
I made it to class on time, and afterwards headed to our Relief Society Activity.
Not as great of a turn out as I had hoped... but it was really neat to spend time with the few girls that came. We took a tour of the Relief Society building on Temple square.
So beautiful!
And the ladies there giving the tours? So cute! Super funny. :)
I was able to look up my great grandmother in their history records of the women who had donated to the building of the Relief Society building!
Really neat experience.
We came back to the school and enjoyed refreshments and each other's company.
My roommate and I did a little grocery shopping together. Then I came back home and showered and got ready for the dance.
I had a blast! It was super fun; they had a kinda glow-in-the-dark theme going on along with their neon orange shirts; reminding us about the school's 'Choose to Give' week.
The dance went pretty late, and I am exhausted.
I have to get up early tomorrow for Stake Conference! I'm really excited, this weekend is going to be super fun, I can tell.
Cuz I've gotta feeln'...

Stake Temple Night

Happy to report that I am still very happy and doing excellent :)
Today was good, I got up early and went to my first class; public speaking. We discussed our informative speechs that we have to give soon (yikes!) and then we headed to the library to do a class project. We were learning how to use the library's search engines.
After class, my roommate invited me to go to her class with her because I had an hour break.
Sure.
It was a business lecture class, and it wasn't too bad. I actually stayed awake the whole time.
Afterwards we went straight to our Doctrine and Covenants class. We discussed sections 21,22,23,24, and 26. We again talked about the organization of the church and about the restoration of Priesthood keys for baptism. Next class is my turn to teach the class; I have to teach section 25. I'm really excited about it, it's a really great section.
Plus it's short.
After class my roommate and I ate lunch together outside and again enjoyed the sunshine.
Sorry, I feel like I am repeating myself, but my days are very similar... (Well, and it's your choice to read this anyways so there.)
I went to my mission prep class where we talked about developing relationships of trust with those we teach. The way he presented the material was very interesting today.
That was my last class today. I headed up to the computer lab and helped a friend with an English assignment. I edited his paper and then waited at the school with some friends until 5.
At 5, I met up with a friend from my ward and we went out to eat before our Stake's Temple night. It was super fun, I really enjoyed spending time with him. After the Temple session, the Mormon Tabernacle choir was rehearsing in the tabernacle, so we poked our heads in for the last ten minutes or so and listened to them. They are so good!
My sister's brother-in-law is in the Mormon Tabernacle choir, and on our way to the trax to go home, we ran into him. It was nice to see him too.
I came home and talked to my sister on the phone. I love her.
I had roommate-facebook-bonding-time. :) and now I need to go to bed....
I have a lot going on this weekend; meetings, Stake Conference, date?, cleaning, homework, Relief Society activity, dance, visiting people...
Ah.... I love being busy :)

Too Much Soap

Lately, I feel like my weeks and on through to the weekends are already booked before Tuesday ends. I am so busy!
Lets start with today. Today I went to school early and studied in the library before my math class. I went to my math class and afterwards headed outside. I've been trying to spend as much time outside as I can, especially while the warm, sunny weather lasts.
I worked on some homework outside for a bit and was back inside for my English class. After class, I had an hour and a half break before my sociology class, so again I found a bench outside and did my reading assignments for that class.
We are reading the book "Bonds that make us Free" in my sociology class, and (again) I highly recommend it. In these past chapters that we have read, I have leaned much about influencing people.
I particularly enjoyed a story told in a recent chapter by the author of a woman and her daughter. The daughter was trying to clean the bathroom tub, but accidentally used to much soap. The mother had a choice: she could either act angrily and blame her daughter for using too much soap and be frustrated that she now had a bigger mess to clean up, or she could try to relate to her; understand that she is trying her best to help out and didn't mean to make a mess.
In order to best influence her daughter in a positive way, the mother had to react positively. In order to best influence her, she had to allow her daughter to influence her.
When the mother said; "You've tried to clean the bathtub. I really appreciate that." Then daughter was able to admit to her mistakes (was more humble), and was willing to be influenced by her mother. "Yeah, Mom, but I used too much soap."
The daughter was willing to admit to her mistake when the mother was gentle about the situation. The daughter was not defensive, but was humble.
I don't give the book justice, but it is really amazing!
After my night class was over, my roommate and I came home completely exhausted. We stayed up way too late last night. It was totally fun though :)
Well, I have some more busy, busy plans coming up this week, so stay tuned! :)

Too Late

I am loving this October weather!
Fact about me: October is my favorite month! I love the fall season; the leaves are beginning to change from their deep summer greens to bright yellows and vibrant oranges, reds and eventually browns. I love the sunshine and the last tastes of warmth. Brightly decorated pumpkins sit on each door step, dry winds pick up, and who can help but love the smells of cinnamon and pumpkin?
Yet, a hint of chilly weather begins to seep in slowly as the days go on; a hint of winter yet to come.
I had a wonderful day today; I got up early and got to my class at 9:20am. After class, I went to our school's weekly devotional. The speaker was again particularly interesting. What I got from his talk, was the importance of being financially secure. In that: we should stay out of debt, pay our tithing, give a generous fast offering, and avoid the love of money; which is the root of all evil. He discussed the importance of getting an education and learning at a young age to be self reliant; learning to work hard. He also explained the importance of being grateful for all the many blessings that our Heavenly Father is constantly giving us and, in that, the importance of giving back to the Lord.
After the devotional, my roommate and I had our Doctrine and Covenants class together, where we discussed section 20. What an amazing section! We reviewed the organization of the church and the importance of remembering all the basics in that organization; the prophets, scriptures, the plan of salvation, missionary work, the priesthood and other leadership responsibilities, etc.
I had a break before my next class, where I had lunch with a few friends.
I love the preach my gospel manual! In my mission prep class, we love having investigators come. Last time we met, our teacher asked a young man in our school who is not a member of church to come to our class and allow us students to roll play with him. We, in front of the class, divided into pairs and-to the best of our ability- tried to teach him based off the teaching techniques. It was an interesting experience to watch my fellow classmates teach another one of our classmates who really didn't have the gospel in his life.
Today we discussed how we could improve and how we felt it went. The student promised to come back and allow us to teach him more.
After all my classes were done for the day, I went to the Temple. I had a beautiful experience there today; very sweet and indescribable.
I came home and made dinner while I helped a friend with his English assignment. Later this evening other friends came over to do laundry and homework.
You know it gets too late...
Lets just say that we have many new inside jokes and perhaps had more laughs than were productive.
It's too late....

The Past Two Days

Wow, yesterday was the first time I didn't post something! I got busy, let me catch you up.
Yesterday I got up early and attended my church meetings for my calling and then my regular church meetings. Both were very amazing, I love the gospel and I know it's true! I love the testimonies of others, the lessons taught, and the Spirit that was there. I'm happy! :)
Later on, I made dinner for my roommates and then we ate carrot cake that I made. Very delicious if I do say so myself.
Fact about me: I love to cook.
Today was a great day as well, I got up early this morning as usual and studied in the library before my math class. I went to my math class and was back at the library again. I got a lot done today!! :) Next I went to English. Sad day, my English teacher will be unable to teach for the rest of the semester, so we have a new teacher. This could be good or bad...
She let us out early today, so bonus points for that :)
I came home this afternoon and spent time with my roommates and got ready for the dance. Some of my roommates and I took the trax down to the school and we rode together with some other friends to the dance.
We definitely got lost.
But, the journey was an adventure! I loved being squished in the back seat with my roommates! ha.
The dance was so fun! I have not been to such a good dance in a long time. Good music that we could actually dance to, super fun friends, and great memories! I had a blast. I got to do some country swing dancing with one of my friends; it was so fun to do that again, I have not done country swing in forever! And he is a super good dancer :) I danced with a couple of people, and it was super fun with all of them. I am so glad I went.
PS: I did not wear my cowboy boots, even though I am a Texan and it was a barn dance.
Sorry.
(Not really ha)
Came home after the dance with only a little bit of homework left to do because I planned ahead today and did most of it this afternoon in my spare time.
Spare time? HA.
I had a great day.

Up to the Canyon

I love Saturdays, because that means it's time to clean!
My mother would be proud of me.
I got up early this morning and took the trax down to our stake center to clean the building with our ward. I had a blast cleaning windows and interacting with our ward members. I enjoy working and serving with my friends; I feel like it really brings me closer to them.
I love working and cleaning.
Afterwards, I came home and cleaned my bathroom and the rest of our apartment. It feels good when it's all clean...
When I was done cleaning, I posted and sorted through my pictures. I cleaned myself up and took trax again down to the Plaza for a surprise party for a dear friend of ours. It was really fun to see her and to wish her a happy birthday.
I came home and I was going to do some homework.... but my naps always end up being longer than expected. :)
Later this evening, some of my roommates got together with some friends from the ward and we all drove up to the canyon for a bonfire with some others from the ward. So much fun! It took us a while to drive up there, but we went singing all the way and some of us were squished in the back seat. (I got to sit in the front, ha)
The bonfire was exciting and super fun. Some of us went and climbed some of the rocks behind us up the mountain a little ways.
I wasn't going to go at first, but I want to try new things. It was actually really fun to climb up with my friends and once at the top, to take in the view. I loved the stars and the smell of the trees. It wasn't too cold at all, surprisingly. And I loved talking and interacting with my fellow ward members and friends.
After the bonfire, we all crammed back into the car and drove back to our apartment and watched a movie.
;)
I certainly had a blast today!

And I Could Not Ask For More

I had a great day today!! I sure love Fridays, especially when my only class for the day was canceled!
Woot!
So I slept in this morning (when was the last time I got to sleep in??) I caught up on all of my laundry and did a bit of cleaning and then got myself ready for the day.
When my roommate came home, she and I went to the capitol at took tons of pictures. I love spending time with my roommate, and doing things that we love to do together. It was super fun.
We ran a few errands together and then we went home. A little later, I met up with a friend and we went to the Temple together. It was really nice to go this evening when it wasn't as busy as it usually is and to spend time with him. Afterwards, we went out to eat, we took the trax, and he walked me home. Super fun. :)
When I came home, I changed my clothes and took trax over to my friend's house and carved pumpkins with her and a bunch of other girls that got together. It was really fun to just hang out with some girls!!
I left early because I have to get up early tomorrow. Tomorrow I have some plans to clean the Stake Center with my ward; I'm really excited. :)
I sure love all this fall weather we are enjoying too!! It was such a lovely, lovely day!! Such wonderful sunshine and warm weather... I love the change in the color of the leaves and the light jackets and pumpkins...
Fact about me: October is by far my favorite month.
Not quite winter yet. Still hanging on to that warm breeze, but the promise of winter is still in the air.
I am loving life! :)
I am so happy, I have so much to be grateful for. I have a wonderful family, the best of friends, this great country to live in that allows me to have freedom of religion and an excellent education...
What more can I ask for?
...Maybe a date...

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

This could be good.
Or bad.
Yep.
A new Target just opened up.
Just a couple blocks away.
It's really close to where I live.
Like, maybe a little too close.
My roommate and I couldn't resist.
We drive past it every day.
To and from school.
We have been waiting for the opening day for weeks.
But we will not be tempted.
"We shall over come!"
Well...
Not today though.
"We'll just look."
"We'll just try it on."
"Just one shirt."
"Yieks!"
"What?"
"Did you see my receipt?"
"It's justifiable, right?"
"It's no big deal."
"What great deals, right?"
"Yeah, look at what we saved!"
Will we be back again soon?
Definitely.

How Long is Too Long in the Library?

Wow, Wednesdays are my long days.
I definitely spent way too long in the library.
I got to school this morning and attended my math class; same old same old.
So, let me back up for a second. Last night when I was doing my homework, I had two assignments to do: write a paper for English and read two chapters and a worksheet for my sociology class. I decided to do my paper, and figured I would find the time to read during the next day. So I stayed up pretty late finishing up that paper and not doing anything for my other class.
So after my math class, I had an hour and a half break that I spent in the library reading before my English class, which I was proudly prepared for with an excellent paper (If I may say so myself).
However, when I arrived to class, it was made evident that our class was canceled for the day and on Friday.
*Sigh*
Well, at least I'm ready for my English class next week.
I was back in the library again till 4pm when my next class started.
So I spent four hours in the library reading and studying for my three hour class tonight.
Oh. My. Goodness.
It doesn't sound like much, but it sure felt like a lot.
How long is too long in the library?
Oh well, it was fun to study with my friend for the last hour and a half. :)
I don't even want to look at my next set of chapters till next week. But that's what I get for procrastinating.
Bright side: I have no classes on Friday because English is my only class! :)
After class, I came home with my roommate.
Ahhhhhhhhhhh.....
One of my friends called me up and invited my roommate and I to come watch a movie at a friends house tonight.
Sure! :)
The four of us watched Toy Story 3; I had not seen it yet. I thought it was super fun!
Homework time....

Open House

What a great day! I feel like no matter how crazy busy I seem to get, I always have a smile on my face; I am just so happy!
Really happy.
I got myself up early and out the door on time this morning, rode the trax with some fun friends from my ward, and got to school on time.
In my public speaking class this morning, we had to present a speech about ourselves and bring a visual aid. I wrote and presented a speech about photography and how much I love it and want to continue to develop my talent. And of course I brought my camera.
I wasn't too nervous, but it was difficult for me to not read from my paper; to make eye-contact with my audience.
I got an A so that made my day.
After class, I went to our school's weekly devotional. Today the Temple president from the Bountiful Temple spoke to us.
So amazing.
I love our devotionals.
He spoke about the importance of the Book of Mormon in our lives, and knowing for ourselves-gaining that testimony-that it is true.
He explained the importance of knowing what the Spirit feels like, and we discussed how to maintain faith and never lose our testimonies.
He counseled us to immerse ourselves in the scriptures-the Book of Mormon-making sure that we take notes and read slowly.
He suggested five points to us about reading the Book of Mormon:
1. Don't hurry the journey- Slow reading. Take time to digest; don't speed read. The Book of Mormon is not to be briefly tasted, but savored.
2. Read out loud-Especially the words of the Savior. (3 Nephi 17)
3. Read with a pencil- Make notes in order to make sure that we remember. God will give to those who are ready.
4. Right time and with the right posture- Reading our scriptures in the morning. Twenty minutes every morning.
5. Pause and pray before you read- Look for messages-find treasures.
In conclusion he emphasized the importance of knowing what the Spirit feels like so we can know for ourselves; being an eye and ear witness of the Book of Mormon by reading it and knowing it.
Loved it.
Afterwards, I attended my Doctrine and Covenants class where my roommate volunteered me to play the piano for our opening hymn.
Awesome.
We discussed Doctrine and Covenants section 4; what a great missionary section. I remember going on splits with the sister missionaries when I was home over the summer, and reciting that with them.
It's really powerful.
I had an hour before my next class and my roommate and I went to Subway to get lunch. I met a guy who worked there who apparently goes to our school.
Cool kid.
I was next off to my mission prep class, where we discussed the first couple of pages out of the Preach My Gospel manual.
Greatest thing ever; I love that manual.
After class, I went grocery shopping with my roommate and then we went to an open house at our Bishop's home. One of the young men in our ward is serving a mission and is leaving tomorrow for the MTC. It was super fun to see our ward and to wish him well.
When we came home it was time (again) to work on homework.
So pretty much an awesome day. :)

Cemetery

Another Monday.
I love Mondays actually; it's a new week and it's time to start off the school week fresh.
I came to school this morning, and what a better way to start my week off than to go to math class!
*Sarcasm*
After class I was off to the library to study and work on my homework, and then I went to my English class.
Don't you hate it when you come to class feeling like you are completely caught up and prepared and then the guy next to you goes, "Hey, how did you do this part of this assignment?" and that was the only one you didn't do?
Uggg sometimes I feel like I never get all of it done!
Well, I do my best, and that's the best I can do.
After class, I went home for the day. I talked to my dad on the phone; I love talking to my family on the phone. I miss them.
I came home, ate, and was out the door again shortly to see a friend at the school; I signed up for a tutor at the school to help me with my public speaking class.
(Giving a speech tomorrow, wish me luck!)
For family home evening tonight, my roommates and I all went together to the cemetery.
Kinda creepy.
We did a scavenger hunt.
In the dark.
In the cemetery.
And man is that place a maze!
It was super fun.
Afterwards as we enjoyed our hot chocolate and cookies, a friend invited me to play ultimate Frisbee with him and his friends tonight.
Sure! :)
I'm not very good at the game, ha, but it was still super fun.
It was a neat game; I had never played before (not to mention in the dark with a glow-in-the-dark Frisbee)
Once I was getting the hang of it and actually knowing who was on my team, the sprinklers went off! ha. So we had to move the goals around a little. No big deal.
But then during the game, as my friend was running to catch the Frisbee, he ran into another team member and fell.
Didn't seem like a big deal.
Until he said: "I think I broke my finger."
Ah! What do I do?
Another one of his friends offered to take him to the hospital.
He asked me to grab his phone and call his mom.
Oh gosh, can you imagine that conversation?
"Hey, you don't know me but I'm with your son and um his finger is broken and he is about to pass out and I have no idea where we are..."
Thankfully, he was able to pop his finger right back into place; it had only been dislocated.
*whew*
I'm glad he is ok. It was super fun to hang out with him too!
Overall, another very good Monday.
:)

Sunday

Ah, I love Sundays.
I love Sunday mornings; waking up early and feeling a different atmosphere about your day. The peace you feel and the smile on your face. I don't ever feel rushed. I love the different feel about the day, it truly is a day of rest and a day of peace.
Today I got up early for my Sunday meeting, but when I was about to walk out the door, a phone call from the Elders Quorum informed me that our meeting was canceled.
Bummer.
So I had two and a half hours to kill.
When my roommates and I all got to church, we sat together and with our other friends. Gosh, I love our ward!
I love fast Sundays too, I love the Spirit I feel when I fast, and when I hear the testimonies of the ward members.
I got to teach in Relief Society today as well, I love teaching.
I came home and rested.
:)
And then spent some time wih my roommates.
I read my scriptures and wrote in my journal.
Ah, I love Sundays.

Crown Burger

Today was a really fun Saturday. This morning my roommates and I got up early to support our schools soccer game; Business College vs. BYU Idaho. It was super fun; I'm usually not a fan of soccer, but I'm glad I went.
Even though we lost miserably. :(
I was able to take some really fun pictures too; I tried out the 'burst' mode on my camera. This allows me to take several pictures in a row without having to stop inbetween. If you click through my pictures, it's almost like a movie; one picture leading to the next that shows movement. For example one of the players kicking the ball: you can see him run up to it, swing his leg and watch the ball fly into the air; all in slow motion.
It's a really fun tool on my camera, I should use it more often.
After the game, I went with a couple of my friends to Crown Burger.
Confession: Crown Burger has been across the street from our school all year long and I have never been.
First time in Crown Burger: I'm hooked. It was way good, and I think I'll be coming back.
When we came home, I was completely exhausted. Not because we had been running around so much today, but I have been so busy all week and physically stressed that I needed to crash.
After my nap, I worked on my Relief Society lesson and my homework. I got a lot done!
I was also able to sort through and post some of my pictures. I love pictures. And then schedule meetings and send out some emails.
Great day.

Canyon Trip

Fact about me: I love taking pictures. Why? A picture certainly speaks a thousand words, maybe more. I love the stories they tell. I love pictures because the capture the moment; moments that you can't get back, but can only remain in memory.

Moments of people ranging in everything from expressing thoughts and laughing together, or even moments of complete disappointment, disaster, anger, and grief. People in action and people pausing. Smiles, fingers, eyes. Old and young. Lending a hand. People in all colors and styles.

What are they thinking about? What are they giggling about? What can I read from their facial expression? What do their eyes say about them?

It's easy to read their emotion, think about their story, relate to them, sympathise with them, try to understand them.

I love people.

I wish I was better at taking pictures of people.

I particularly love capturing moments in nature; still life. Remembering the seasons and admiring the beauty in the world that we often take for granted. For example, I love the Aspen trees; first off because they remind me of my mother. She loves them. Secondly because everything about them is beautiful; from their shimmery leaves that seem to gently wave to you as they flutter in the breeze, their lovely blend of soft yellows and perfect light greens leaves that reflect the sunlight perfectly, and their unique white bark and each tree with its individual set of black stripes.

I love the geometry in nature; finding the odd numbers; framing my picture with groups of threes or fives with flowers and trees.

I especially love macro photography. I love coming up close with my subject, making it completely in focus and the background out of focus; creating depth.

I had so much fun going up to the canyon with my great friends today and taking pictures; it's something that I enjoy being apart of.

Chocolate Cake Kinda Day

Fact about me: You can never go wrong with chocolate.
I know this is a repeat, but only because it is very important.
I love getting everything done, don't you? Except I don't love the lack of sleep part... Oh well.
Today I got ready for the day, and me and my new pink shirt walked out the door on time and ready for class.
I needed a bright color today.
Today in my public speaking class, we watched and analyzed Martin Luther King Jr.'s 'I Have A Dream' speech. So well done; just incredibly well worded and well presented.
In my break between classes, I said hello to my new buddies at the library (once you start going to the library often, you tend to run into the same people all the time) and started studying and working on my homework.
I attended my Doctrine and Covenants class next. What a great class today; we studied from sections 7 and 13, which are both very short sections. We discussed the blessings of the priesthood being restored on the earth today and how it will never again be taken from the earth. What a great promise! Section 7 was really interesting to me; we talked about John the beloved and Peter in the New Testament, as well as the three Nephites in the Book of Mormon; we compared their desires to build the kingdom and do a greater work. We discussed ways about what more we could do to build the Lord's kingdom and do a greater work.
Today was burger day at the cafe. My roommate and I couldn't resist. After class, we went and got lunch at the cafe, and chatted about our plans for the weekend.
Mission prep was my last class for the day; we talked about the importance of gaining a testimony for ourselves. We read from Joesph Smith history about the first vision, and discussed the importance of obeying and following the prophets. Doctrine and Covenants 1:37-38. When we have the desire to want to know if something is true, we take action; we do as the prophet has counseled, because we have faith that he speaks from the Lord, and our faith becomes knowledge and testimony.
When class was over, I headed to the computer lab to help a friend with his English assignment. I love helping other people; I love applying our school's learning model of 'teaching one another' as I seek out ways to help others with their assignments.
I know I'm going to need as much help as I can get with math...
I went home and fell asleep for... umm longer than I wanted to be.
I got up and got ready for my meeting.
I decided to make a chocolate cake for the girls coming over for this meeting.
Who doesn't love chocolate cake fresh out of the oven?
That's what I thought.
So let me just brag a little here, it is the most perfect creation of perfectly blended ingredients, moist texture, creamy frosting, and to-die-for delicious chocolate flavored cake ever made.
I love baking.
It was delicious.
And I'm done bragging now.
After my meeting was over, it was now time to work on homework... again...
Just keeps starting over, doesn't it?
It was definitely a chocolate cake kinda day.

Starbusts

I love being busy; I feel like my schedule is increasingly becoming more and more filled as my days go on.
Today I got to school early and did some homework in the library. I think I did indeed spend a large amount of my time in the library today; reading and catching up on some school work.
I went to my first class at 11:00am. Our math teacher began class by showing us a video on YouTube of a couple from Sweden doing a swing dance in a competition some where.
Me: "What does this have to do with math again?"
Totally random.
I feel like my teacher often gets off topic easily, and the students in our class don't help much. Math class today kinda felt like a waste of my time; I really wanted to leave because we weren't even talking about math till we were 45 minutes into class.
I endured.
I went back to the library to continue working on homework till 1:30pm when I went to my English class.
After class, yep you guessed it, I was back to work in the library. Sorry, my day was really boring.
I was mostly catching up on some reading assignments. We are reading the book 'Bonds That Make Us Free' in my sociology of marriage and family class; and let me just say this: it's so good. I am only on chapter seven, but it is definitely one of my favorite books ever. I highly recommend it.
I had my sociology class today from 4:00pm-7:00pm. I love that class, it's definitely my favorite class this semester. I love the reading assignments and material, my teacher is phenomenal, and the students in my class are well rounded and make good comments in class; we always have great discussions. I have super fun friends in that class, and I am making new friends already.
Wish my math class was more like this one.
The only downside of this class is that it's three hours long. Sooooo long. But we usually get on some really great topics of discussion as we talk about what we read, learned, and have tried to apply into our lives over the week.
We had a break in the middle of our class today like we usually do. My roommate came with me to my class today because I thought she would really enjoy it. Usually during the break I stay in the class room and continue talking with my group, but today my roommate wanted to run down stairs to the book store to get something to eat.
I guess thats another downside to this class; it's right in the evening time when we usually would be having dinner...
Fact about me: I really don't like eating in front of other people! (I think I have already said that before, but I'm just saying it again.)
Well, while we were there, my roommate and I were in line and she was going to get something and I wasn't.
Obviously.
But one of my friends from class offered to grab me something. I politely declined, but he insisted on getting me something.
My roommate didn't help much. "She likes starbursts!" She chimed in.
So I ended up going back to class with a pack of starbursts. It was super nice of him.
After class, my roommate and I headed out with another friend to the Gateway where we got food, and just walked around and had a blast window shopping. It was kinda relaxing to get some fresh air and have a little fun tonight.
Plus I got a new shirt. :)
Anyways, we came back home and started on homework again.
Ah, homework never seems to end, does it?
My roommates and I planned out our week. We planned a trip to the Provo canyon on Friday and invited a few friends. I am SO excited to be able to take pictures up in the canyon!
Now, it's time to get back to work...

See You At Christmas

What a long day today has been.
And it's still going.
Still so much to do...
Today I woke up early, got ready for the day, and then walked out the door around 8:20am.
I attended my first class at 9:20am; public speaking. Today we watched a speech given by Barbara Bush to the graduating class of 1990 at Wellesley College. I love watching speeches and analyzing what they do and don't do well.
Fact about me: I love to observe people. I'm not weird, I promise! I find it interesting to watch a crowd or a group of people and observe how they interact with each other. It's just interesting to me.
I particularly love watching other people give speeches; especially more so than giving them myself.
Because I love writing so much, I love to hear how others write when they give public speeches. It helps me improve my writing techniques and vocabulary when I hear how others organize, use transitions, and humor in their speeches.
Fact about me: I am an audio learner. (If that even makes since) If I hear something, I learn it better than reading it or seeing it. Hence why I am so good at quoting movies; I listen to them all the time (well, not all the time) and I am able to remember what was said. I am also a very visual learner as well.
Barbara Bush's speech was very well done; especially knowing her audience. She, being a very conservative woman amongst very liberal ladies at this college, did a fantastic job conveying a message that appropriate and applicable to her audience. Knowing the situation before watching the speech, helped me understand and analyze the speech better.
Today was devotional day at our school. After class, I headed down stairs for the devotional. The devotional was most excellent today; the speaker's topic was marriage, however I felt like her talk was very unique. What I mean by that is, she didn't go the same route that most people would have gone with marriage as their topic. She talked more about preparation for life, and how that same preparation will be key in preparing for marriage.
For example, she spoke about having the basics; looking forward to learning, being goal oriented, searching and finding our testimonies, learning how the Spirit feels and speaks to us, having a firm foundation of faith and trust, and always being obedient, etc.
She taught us to be calm and confident; having faith no matter how bad the storm is. She related the story of Jesus Christ calming the sea. We need to have faith in who he is, and how he loves us.
Faith is an action; taking steps into the dark, daily scripture study, daily prayer, hard working, and enduring to the end, etc. Challenges can help grow when we stand steady and have faith, and will help us become like our Savior. We don't know whats coming; we have to take steps that show our trust, and do things for the right reasons. Eternal perspective; think about what you will be gaining, rather than what you will be losing.
My roommate and I had our Doctrine and Covenants class today where we discussed sections 6,8, and 9. We discussed how the Spirit feels to each of us; the burning in our bosom vs. the stupor of thought as written in section 9:8-9.
I had an hour and twenty minutes before my next class, where I met up with my mom for lunch before she had to catch her flight back home. We were only out for a little while though, because I had to be back for class.
See you at Christmas.
:(
I'm glad I saw her again before she left.
My last class for the day was mission prep. It was an interesting class today; a girl in our class brought her friend to class with her who is a recent convert to the church. Our teacher had her sit up front and answer questions from the class about how the missionaries had taught her; what did she like and what worked for her etc. Kinda interesting.
After class, I waited for a friend to get out of class and then helped him with some of his photography homework.
Hmmmm. Then I went home.
But I was only there for an hour or so; I was right back on trax and headed back to the school for a meeting.
When my meeting was done I came back home to a lovely pile of homework waiting for me.
Ah, home sweet home.
Just another busy day.

Nail Polish

"Monday Monday, so good to me, Monday Monday, it was all I hoped it would be..." (The Mamas and the Papas.)
I had another really great day; life is treating me well. I got up early for classes which went well today. I love learning; I feel like I'm doing well in my classes and that I am gaining much from my studies.
I came home and made dinner for a friend in the ward who was sick. My roommate and I went and visited with him.
"And now, for the sake of these things which I have spoken unto you—that is, for the sake of retaining a remission of your sins from day to day, that ye may walk guiltless before God—I would that ye should impart of your substance to the poor, every man according to that which he hath, such as feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, visiting the sick and administering to their relief, both spiritually and temporally, according to their wants." (Mosiah 4:26.)
I love doing what I can for others. Put me to work; I love to serve.
My roommates and I went to family home evening for a bit and then headed out to the grocery store. We picked up a few needed items and headed back home.
The four of us put on a chick-flick movie, washed our faces with special soap and masks, and painted our nails.
Girls...
Fact about me: I am not usually one to wear nail polish. Ever. I'm just not a fan of colorful nails or long nails; I cut my nails really short. Just do.
But,
my roommates convinced me to paint them this once.
Too many colors to choose from...
So my fingernails are light pink.
I can't stop looking at them.
I can't remember the last time I painted my nails, and I bet you that the last time I painted my nails, it was probably with clear nail polish.
True story.
I'm just a plain person; I don't wear a ton of jewelery, makeup, or nail polish...I'm feminine, but plain...
Anyways, we did our homework and I planned out the rest of my week.
Sent a bunch of emails out.
Picked out what I want to wear tomorrow.
(Which will probably change tomorrow anyways.)
And read my scriptures.
Another day gone by. Still so much to do...

General Conference II

Wow, what a most wonderful and enriching weekend!
I got up early this morning again and got myself ready to go to Conference. My roommates had other plans, so I was going to head to the JSMB for the morning session, stick around on Temple Square and practice taking pictures of people, (come on, what a better time to practice than Conference weekend with all these people!) and then head back to the JSMB for the afternoon session.
I put a slow cooker together before I left so that I would have a nice meal when I came back, and then I walked out the door on time to catch trax.
As I walked out the door, a really great friend of mine called me up and asked where I was watching Conference and I told him I was headed to the JSMB. We met up and he had an extra ticket to watch Conference at the Conference center! So nice! It was so fun to see him again and to watch Conference with him at the Conference center.
What amazing speakers! I again found a common theme in Conference of trust and obedience. It's hard for me to pin-point which was my favorite talk, but Elder Dallin H. Oaks is definitely my favorite speaker.
He spoke about two lines of revelation/communication; personal and priesthood. It is difficult for me to describe in words, even when looking at my notes, what his talk was about for me. I don't think I can possibly say without directly quoting him what he talked about. I loved how he talked about the importance of both lines of communication; in that they are both different, but both essential. One is not without the other. It is a matter of obedience when listening to both and not just one or the other alone. We must be always worthy and obedient to have the Spirit to guide us.
I also really loved Sister Mary N. Cook's talk and I can't wait to go back and read her talk in the Ensign.
President Thomas S. Monson's talk on gratitude really touched my heart. He described gratitude as a divine principle; we need to have an attitude of gratitude. He read from the scriptures about how the Savior cleansed the ten lepers, and only one came back to thank him. We need to be grateful in all things, and especially for the fullness and light of the gospel.
After the first session was over, I said goodbye to my friend and I walked over to Temple Square. I took a couple of shots, but it's kinda hard for me to take pictures of people. I feel like I am better at still life and scenery...
Still fun though, I think I got a couple of good shots.
I ate my lunch that I brought with me and then headed into the JSMB for the last session of Conference.
I like watching Conference by myself sometimes for one session at least, because, not that I didn't focus when I was with others, but I like to focus on my own thoughts and really listen..if that makes since.
So many great talks!
I particularly loved Elder Larry R. Lawrence's talk about being a courageous parent, and teaching and protecting your children. Loved it. Can't wait to go back and read it again.
I also loved Elder Per G. Malm's talk and the analogy he used of the tree. The tree seemed fine from the outside, but was completely hollow on the inside, and filled with trash. He talked about not allowing things to destroy us from the inside, out. We need to be solid, and not fill ourselves with things that are of no worth. Steadfast and immovable.
Elder Mervyn B. Arnold and Elder M. Russell Ballard's talks were both excellent as well.
So great!
Then I came home and ate a really nice meal that I made earlier and talked on the phone with my little sister. She is a freshman in high school and is just loving it! Ha she makes me laugh.
She is still not warming up to the idea of early morning seminary, but I keep telling her how much I enjoyed waking up early and attending early morning seminary and how it has blessed my life. She is a little less convinced.
Oh well. She has four more years to go.
My roommates and I put on a movie and (of course) I could quote the entire movie. ha.
I'm sad that the weekend is over! And sad that I have to go back to school tomorrow....

General Conference

Fact about me: I love General Conference!!
I had such a wonderful day today. My really great friend from my ward had a few extra tickets for General Conference at the conference center this morning, so my roommate and I were able to attend at the Conference center with her! We were so blessed, I love going to at least one session at the Conference center. What an amazing opportunity! We had such great seats too, we sat up on the balcony and to the far right; we were right up front!
Such amazing speakers today too.
After Conference was over, I met up with my mom who flew into town this week for her mission reunion. It was great to see her! We took the trax to my apartment and then took a Sandy train to close by where my sister lives. My sister came and picked us up and we went over to her home. I love watching Conference with my family! I was with my two older sisters and their husbands, my mom, and my sister's brother-in-law. (My sister's brother-in-law is in the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. How cool is that?)
I love the Spirit in her home, especially while watching Conference. I love being with my family, especially because I don't see them as often. I miss them, and every time I see them they bring such a sweet, sweet Spirit into my heart, and I love them so very much. They have great peace in their homes and I can feel their love for me, which brings me peace and uplifts me when I'm with them.
They also understand my humor and it makes me feel better that I can make them laugh :) For example, I like to quote movies all the time, and I suppose because we have all seen the same movies, they understand where I'm coming from. However, when I'm around some of my friends and I quote a movie they sometimes don't quite understand what I'm talking about, ha! :)
Anyways, the second session of Conference especially 'hit home' for me, (for lack of a better phrase.) I found a common theme of faith and following the Prophet in most of the talks given.
It's really hard for me to choose one particular favorite talk from today, but I did enjoy Elder David M. McConkie's talk in the morning session about how to learn and how to teach.
He asked us to think of a teacher that was memorable. How did that teacher help me learn? What was it that set that teacher apart form other teachers? He talked about how learning was about the teacher having the right attitude. If the teacher does not have the Spirit and the right attitude, he may be teaching correct principles and lessons, but he will not be successful without the Spirit. Successful teachers also need a pure love of the gospel and enthusiasm.
They need to: 1. Immerse in the daily scriptures study, for they cannot teach what they do not know. They need to become acquainted with the Spirit. They need to read the handbook of instructions and seek out answers. 2. Apply the things that they learn into their lives and keep the commandments. 3. Seek Heaven's help; take responsibility to learn. Pray for the class. 4. Importance of using agency to act on spiritual promptings, they need to submit to the will of the Lord, which will strengthen faith.
Such an amazing talk!
Some of my other favorites form the morning were Elder D. Todd Christofferson and President Dieter F. Uchtdorf.
Wow!
From the afternoon session, one of my particular favorites was Elder Robert D. Hales. He spoke about agency and obedience. It made me think of my favorite hymn, hymn number 113: Our Savior's Love. There is a line in that hymn that says: "We love thy law, we will obey." I love that.
He talked about using our agency wisely, and the importance of being obedient always. I love the theme of obedience.
He told the story of Saul the king, who when the Prophet Samuel found out that he had not done what the Lord had commanded him in exactness, Saul first began to make excuses. He tried to deny it, then blamed the people and said he was going to use the animals they kept for a sacrifice to the Lord. However: "To obey is better than to sacrifice."
So powerful to me.
Some of my other favorites were Elder Quentin L. Cook and Elder Gong.
Wow, what a day. So, so good.
My brothers-in-law later went to the Priesthood session and I was able to spend time with my dear, dear sisters and my mom :)
I'm excited for tomorrow!

Game Night

I had such a great day today! I love my Friday schedule: I get to sleep in, I had one class, I went to the Temple, had a late lunch with my roommate, and then the party began!
It was really simple, but we invited a few friends over to play some games. We shared a bunch of laughs and had a blast playing games like Apples to Apples and Would you rather?
I love playing games. It can be super fun with a fun group of people, and you end up getting to know people in a new way; you get to know there funny side. Especially later at night. :)
Now that the fun and games are over, the question is: Will we all be able to stay awake for General Conference tomorrow morning? :)
I love General Conference, I have been so looking forward to it all week.
My friend actually just talked to me and said she had extra tickets for Saturday morning for my roommate and I! I am so excited, I love watching at least one session at the Conference center. So amazing!
I also love watching it at the Joseph Smith Building. I remember my first semester at the Business College, I didn't know where to watch Conference, so I went to the JSB. It was so nice there, and what made it really great was I met someone who is now one of my really great friends. :)
Should be a great weekend, and it has already started out great! :)
